Scientific assessments of water quality and biogeochemistry since 1995.

After 18 years at the Southeast Environmental Research Center at Florida International University in Miami, Dr. Joe Boyer joined Plymouth State University in 2012 as Director of the Center for the Environment. In 2018 he was appointed as Director of the Center for Research & Innovation at PSU providing support for strategically important, interdisciplinary research & scholarship efforts by all faculty, students, and staff in conjunction with regional community partners.

Joe ‘retired’ from PSU in June 2021 and formed Entelekic Environmental, which focuses on select environmental consulting projects in Florida and Northeast US.

He is experienced in microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of coastal oceans, estuaries, lakes, rivers, and groundwater ecosystems. His interests are in both natural and human‐induced physical/chemical effects water quality with specific expertise in bacterial and phytoplankton nutrient cycling processes, ecosystem biogeochemistry, and long‐term ecological time series. His research also involved developing system‐wide indicators of ecosystem restoration and incorporating the valuation of ecosystem services into science, management, and policy thinking. He has served on numerous national and regional scientific advisory boards, including five national program reviews and multiple assessments of academic and federal science programs.
